Friars Walk, Newport

Overview
Friars Walk is pivotal to Newport’s ambitious 2020 Vision, a masterplan of citywide schemes and projects that aims to deliver a more prosperous and vibrant city. Sited between the River Usk and Newport’s existing main retail zone this £110 million, 36,000m2 development encompasses retail, leisure, dining and entertainment spaces, significantly contributing to the revitalisation of the High Street and helping to restore civic pride by reconnecting a disjointed part of the cityscape to create a cohesive, attractive and accessible urban realm. SDS was entrusted with designing a surface water drainage system to ensure that the new shopping centre and surrounding facilities are free from flood risk.
What We Did
SDS designed and delivered a comprehensive surface water management solution for the Friars Walk development, accounting for its location in a highly built-up and busy urban area and the requirement for deep drainage. This involved the installation of two 350-metre-long sections of Weholite HDPE piping, replacing the existing sewer system under the site which features integrated flow control chambers, including stop logs, penstocks and a dry weather flow channel.

Results
The Friars Walk project has been a resounding success, attracting over 10 million visitors in its first year and having a marked positive impact on the local economy, including the creation of over 1,500 jobs. The project has also received industry recognition, winning the 2016 ‘Revo Gold Award’ for Best New Centre in England and Wales, along with a ‘Considerate Constructors Silver Award’. The surface water drainage system, developed by SDS, ensures that the site remains free from flood risk, contributing to the overall success of the project and bolstering Newport’s retail profile.
