Defence
SDS water management systems provide substantial benefits in flood prevention, environment protection and drought mitigation to the UK’s defence estate.

Protecting the UK’s defence estate from the impacts of too much or too little rainfall
In order to establish the Ministry Of Defence (MOD) estate’s vulnerabilities to the UK’s changing climate, with a view to building adaptive capacity on a site by site basis, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has developed the Climate Impacts Risk Assessment Methodology (CIRAM), which identifies the risks to defence outputs from current and future climate or extreme weather events, and the actions required to maintain and optimise operational capability.
Furthermore, as one of the UK’s largest landowners, the MOD has a major role to play in the conservation of the UK’s natural resources, with responsibility for stewardship of some of the most unspoilt and remote areas in the country and statutory obligations to protect the protected habitats and the species that they support.
SDS storm water attenuation systems ensure that Ministry Of Defence sites, and the buildings, facilities and equipment located on them, are protected from the risk of excessive rainfall events which might otherwise lead to flooding.
SDS treatment devices ensure that surface water runoff from the MOD estate does not contaminate the local environment, whilst SDS rainwater and grey water harvesting and recycling systems help replace potable water with recycled rainwater where a non-potable supply will suffice.

Engineered and nature-based SuDS combine to manage surface water effectively whilst delivering environmental, financial, and social and mental welfare, benefits.
In “hybrid” storm management systems, as represented in the graphic below, SDS-engineered water storage and treatment devices below-ground combine with, enhance the performance and extend the lifespan of, vegetative SuDS materials, such as ponds, swales and ditches, above-ground.
Allied to SDS Intellistorm® and SYMBiotIC™ smart technologies providing autonomous control, live monitoring and reporting, SDSengineered devices protect nature-based solutions from the impacts of excessive or insufficient rainfall, whilst also ensuring a consistent supply of water for irrigation and resource provision purposes.

SDS GEOlight® tanks partner with Weholite pipes and manholes.
SDS GEOlight® storage tanks and Weholite conveyance and inspection equipment work together to ensure surface water is managed efficiently and effectively, from its point of entry into the SuDS system to its final release. Weholite manholes also provide a suitable location in which to house SDS SYMBiotIC™ smart monitoring and control devices.
